Ms Reeves stated she needed to make the choices due to the earlier authorities’s “deeply irresponsible” overspending, and that Mr Hunt coated up the true state of the general public funds when he was chancellor.
“They weren’t choices I needed to make, they weren’t choices I anticipated to make, however when confronted with a £22bn black gap, I needed to act,” she instructed the BBC, including that she had “to repair the mess left by the earlier authorities”.
However Mr Hunt has disputed this, and has written to Cupboard Secretary Simon Case to complain about what he sees as conflicting claims made by officers in regards to the “black gap” which risked “bringing the civil service into disrepute”.
